Drakensberg Escarpment Traverse
Dragon Mountains high-altitude technical challenge
The Drakensberg Escarpment Traverse climbs from lowveld thornbush into the rarified air of the High Berg, where ancient San rock art adorns sandstone overhangs and Basotho horsemen still move cattle along mountain paths their grandfathers carved. The route tackles the notorious Moteng Pass — a series of hairpin switchbacks that climb 1,200 meters in 8 kilometers, with loose shale that’ll have you riding the diff lock and praying your tires hold. Cathedral Peak looms overhead as you navigate river crossings that can turn lethal in summer thunderstorms.
This is expert-level territory demanding modified 4WD with low-range, diff locks, and aggressive tread — the escarpment doesn’t forgive stock vehicles. Winter (May to August) offers stable weather but freezing nights above 2,800 meters. Border formalities at Caledonspoort add complexity, requiring passports and vehicle permits. The reward is crossing one of Africa’s most dramatic geological features, with views that stretch from the Highveld to the Indian Ocean on clear days.
