White Pocket

Stunning sandstone formation in Vermilion Cliffs requiring serious 4WD skills to reach one of Arizona's most photographed geological wonders.

A surreal landscape of white and pink swirled sandstone formations that looks like something from another planet. The undulating rock surfaces create natural pools, arches, and wave-like patterns that photographers chase from around the world. Located deep in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, this place sees steady visitation but never feels crowded due to the challenging access.

Reaching White Pocket requires 20 miles of increasingly technical 4WD roads through deep sand washes and over slickrock. High-clearance 4WD with low range is mandatory — don’t attempt this in anything less. The final approach includes loose sand that can trap even experienced drivers. Best visited in cooler months when the rock isn’t scorching hot.
