Carson Range Mining District Road
Comstock silver mines to Sierra Nevada peaks
The Carson Range Mining District Road switchbacks up the eastern Sierra Nevada slopes from Virginia City’s famous Comstock Lode to a string of forgotten silver mines perched at 8,500 feet. Built in the 1870s to haul ore from high-altitude claims, this 18-mile route passes the ruins of the Crown Point Mine and Devil’s Gate stamp mill before reaching spectacular Lake Tahoe vistas from the Nevada side of the range. The road climbs through four distinct ecosystems—sagebrush desert to alpine meadows—while following original mining wagon routes carved into granite mountainsides.
Difficult rating reflects steep grades, loose rock, and narrow ledges where mining wagons once struggled with silver ore loads. Stock high-clearance vehicles can manage lower sections, but full 4WD becomes essential above 7,000 feet where granite shelves and boulder fields challenge even experienced drivers. Summer and early fall offer best conditions; winter snow closes upper reaches until June. The reward combines Nevada mining history with some of the state’s most dramatic mountain scenery, plus access to pristine backcountry camping spots overlooking the Sierra crest.
