Bald Eagle State Forest Sones Road Dispersed Sites
Sones Road follows a ridgeline through mixed oak and maple forest, offering several pullouts with partial valley views to the south. The road dead-ends at an old fire tower foundation, with the best camping spots found in the final mile before the turnaround. Sites are naturally spaced 100-200 yards apart, each with decent leveling and most sporting fire rings left by previous visitors. During leaf-off season, you get glimpses of the valley below.
The road is passable to most vehicles but gets rougher in the final mile — high-clearance recommended for the best spots near the tower foundation. No water sources in the immediate area, so pack what you need. Popular with hunters in fall, otherwise sees light use.
