Estrada da Serra do Roncador Gold Mining Circuit

Gold rush ghosts in jaguar country

Moderate

The Serra do Roncador has swallowed more prospectors than it ever made rich, and this rutted mining access road threads through country where the Xingu River headwaters cut deep into Mato Grosso’s red earth. You’ll pass the skeletal remains of Garimpo São Félix, where hydraulic monitors still rust in the jungle, then climb the escarpment to where the road splits at Pedra Preta — take the left fork unless you want to end up axle-deep in a seasonal swamp that claimed a Land Rover in ’97.

Moderate difficulty but the isolation makes it serious — stock 4WD with good ground clearance handles the technical bits, but bring recovery gear and two spare tires minimum. Dry season only (May through September), and fuel up in Barra do Garças because there’s nothing for 200 kilometers. What you get is empty country that looks like it hasn’t changed since the first bandeirantes pushed through, plus some of the best stargazing in Brazil when you camp on the plateau rim.
