Belmont Plateau Fire Department Training Circuit

Urban disaster training turned 4x4 playground

Moderate

The abandoned Philadelphia Fire Department training facility at Belmont Plateau sits on a windswept hill overlooking the Schuylkill River, where decades of smoke and diesel fuel have stained the concrete obstacles that once prepared city firefighters for urban disasters. This forgotten corner of Fairmount Park offers technical driving challenges through collapsed building facades, burn tower foundations, and debris fields that test vehicle placement and driver patience. The main loop connects the old ladder training tower to the hazmat simulation area via a series of concrete barriers and simulated rubble piles.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on your line choice, requiring high-clearance vehicles for the concrete obstacles and metal debris scattered throughout the 2.5-mile circuit. Best accessed during dry conditions when the clay soil isn’t a slick mess. No permits required since it’s public park land, but watch for cyclists and joggers who use the perimeter roads. The real reward is the elevated views of Center City and the river valley, plus the strange satisfaction of conquering obstacles designed to simulate urban catastrophe.
