Ruta Provincial 307 Laguna Blanca Circuit
Flamingo paradise in Patagonian highlands
The Laguna Blanca circuit winds through one of Patagonia’s most accessible yet pristine volcanic landscapes, where thousands of flamingos feed in mineral-rich waters against a backdrop of ancient lava flows. Starting from Zapala, the gravel road crosses rolling steppe before revealing the brilliant white lake surrounded by black volcanic cones. The route passes several excellent camping spots with unobstructed views, though constant wind is the price for this dramatic setting.
Moderate difficulty mainly due to washboard surfaces and occasional soft sand patches near the lakeshore. Any high-clearance vehicle handles it fine, though 4WD helps in sandy sections. Best visited October through March when flamingo populations peak and weather cooperates. Fuel available in Zapala; carry extra water as none available on circuit. Perfect introduction to Patagonian overland travel with reliable road conditions and stunning wildlife viewing opportunities.
