Hurricane Creek Recreation Area Sand Ridge Trail
Natural bridges and swimming holes for the whole family
The well-maintained gravel road to Hurricane Creek Recreation Area offers one of Alabama’s most accessible adventures, winding 2.8 miles through the William B. Bankhead National Forest to reach a series of natural sandstone bridges and crystal-clear swimming holes carved by centuries of flowing water. The route follows an old CCC road built in the 1930s, passing through mixed pine and hardwood forest before descending into the creek valley where massive sandstone formations create natural arches and deep emerald pools perfect for cooling off after a dusty drive.
This easy-rated trail welcomes any vehicle with basic ground clearance, making it perfect for families or those new to backcountry driving. The gravel surface stays in good condition year-round, though spring offers the best combination of flowing water and comfortable temperatures for swimming. No permits required and cell service remains decent throughout most of the route. Developed camping available at the recreation area, plus numerous pull-offs for picnicking along the creek. It’s Alabama backcountry at its most welcoming — a genuine taste of wilderness without the technical challenges that keep some folks on the pavement.
