Parque Nacional Lauca Camping Las Cuevas
This CONAF-managed campground sits at serious altitude near the Bolivia border, offering designated sites with basic facilities and stunning views of the snow-capped Parinacota and Pomerape volcanoes. Six sites with fire rings and pit toilets, but bring everything including water — the elevation hits hard and weather can turn violent fast. Vicuñas and flamingos are common visitors.
Access via paved Ruta 11 from Putre, but expect washboard sections and possible snow closures May through August. Altitude sickness is real at this elevation — acclimatize in Putre first. No reservations, first-come basis, and rangers collect fees on-site.
