Circuito Grande Tierra del Fuego
World's southernmost island circumnavigation
This massive 900-kilometer circuit takes you around the entirety of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, from Ushuaia’s tourist crowds through the Chilean section via rutted logging roads that turn to axle-deep mud soup, then back into Argentina past windswept sheep estancias and abandoned mining camps where you’ll cross the same rivers that broke early explorers. The route includes the infamous Paso Garibaldi through untouched lenga forests and technical creek crossings near Estancia Harberton that can strand you for days.
This difficult route demands experienced expedition skills — river crossings change hourly with tides, weather shifts from sun to sideways sleet in minutes, and help is 200 kilometers away on the best sections. Full expedition kit essential: recovery gear, spare parts, camping gear rated for Patagonian wind. April through November only when rivers aren’t flash-flooding. Border crossings with Chile add paperwork delays, but you’ll complete one of the world’s most remote island circumnavigations and understand why Magellan called this the Land of Fire.
