Mirador Volcán Lonquimay
This windswept overlook sits at 1,800m elevation with commanding views of Volcán Lonquimay’s perfect cone and the surrounding monkey puzzle tree forests. The volcanic crater last erupted in 1988, leaving fresh lava flows visible on the upper slopes. On clear days you can see across to Argentina’s peaks. Interpretive signs explain the area’s volcanic geology and the ancient Araucaria trees that dot the mountainsides.
Reached via 8km of rough gravel road from the main highway between Temuco and Lonquimay town. High-clearance recommended for the final 3km. Can be snowbound June through September. Bring warm layers—even summer evenings are cold at this elevation.
