Ruta de las Lagunas Altiplanicas
Andean lagoon circuit above the clouds
This high-altitude route threads through the remote Antofagasta highlands, connecting a chain of pristine lagoons via abandoned copper mining access roads and pre-Columbian trade paths. The track climbs steadily from Calama through increasingly barren volcanic terrain, crossing the stark Salar de Ascotán before reaching Laguna Lejía at 4,300 meters, where flamingos feed against a backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes. The route continues northeast past Laguna Miñiques and through the challenging Paso de Toco, where loose volcanic scree and altitude demand respect.
Rated Difficult due to extreme altitude, technical rocky sections, and complete isolation. High-clearance 4WD essential, along with extra fuel, water, and altitude sickness precautions. Best tackled May through September when weather is stable. No services for 200+ kilometers, making this a true backcountry commitment. The payoff is witnessing some of Chile’s most pristine altiplano wilderness, with world-class stargazing and encounters with vicuñas and Andean flamingos in their natural habitat.
