Salar de Surire Wildlife Circuit
Flamingo paradise on the high Altiplano
Salar de Surire spreads across the Altiplano like a white mirror at 4,200 meters, where three species of flamingos feed in mineral-rich waters beneath snow-capped volcanic peaks. This circuit through Lauca National Park starts from Putre, climbing through vicuña habitat and past ancient Aymara villages before reaching the salt flat’s edge. The track follows raised berms across the salar itself, where getting stuck means a long walk for help through terrain that hasn’t changed since the Pleistocene.
Difficult rating reflects altitude sickness risks and technical navigation across unmarked salt flats. Stock high-clearance 4WD handles the route, but carry GPS waypoints since whiteout conditions can develop quickly. Best tackled April through November when rains don’t flood access roads. No services exist for 200 kilometers, so pack fuel, water, and warm gear—temperatures drop below freezing nightly even in summer. The reward is wildlife photography opportunities impossible anywhere else on the continent, plus natural hot springs for soaking altitude-weary bones.
