East Texas Neches River Industrial Heritage Trail
Railroad grades through Big Thicket oil and timber country
Follow the ghost of the Longview, Sabine & Eastern Railroad through dense Piney Woods bottomland where oil derricks once pumped alongside lumber mills. This network of interconnected logging roads and abandoned rail grades winds through the heart of East Texas petroleum history, passing rusted pump jacks from the 1930s East Texas Oil Boom and the concrete foundations of sawmills that fed Houston’s growth. The most memorable stretch follows the old Neches River ferry crossing near Evadale, where you’ll navigate soft sand approaches and potentially ford Cypress Creek if recent rains have washed out the old timber bridge.
Easy to moderate difficulty requiring only high clearance, though low-range helps in sandy sections and the creek crossing. Summer brings brutal humidity and thick vegetation, making fall through early spring the preferred seasons. No permits required for the state forest portions, but some sections cross private timber land — stick to marked roads. Pack insect repellent, plenty of water, and emergency extraction gear for sandy spots. The payoff is genuine Big Thicket solitude and a fascinating glimpse into Texas’s timber and petroleum legacy, with excellent dispersed camping along the higher ridges away from the creek bottoms.
