Sam Houston National Forest Montgomery County Sand Pits

Montgomery County Sand Pits snake through the deepest timber country in East Texas, following ghost logging roads carved during the great pine harvest of the 1920s. These sugar-sand trails wind between 100-foot loblolly pines and bald cypress swamps, crossing Caney Creek at half a dozen points where the soft bottom can swallow a truck to the axles. The infamous Sawmill Bog sits midway through, a quarter-mile stretch of black muck that’s claimed dozens of rigs over the decades.

Difficult rating due to deep sand and water crossings—aired-down tires and momentum are your friends here. High-clearance 4WD minimum, but serious mud tires and a winch will save your bacon when the sand gets deep. Best tackled February through May when water levels are down and the sand is firmer. No permits needed on Forest Service land. Camping allowed at designated sites along Caney Creek. Pure East Texas pine country experience, where the air smells like resin and the trails disappear into green shadows.
