Kiamichi Mountains Wolf Creek Technical Challenge
Technical mountain challenge through mining ruins
The old mining roads that climb Wolf Creek in the Kiamichi Mountains haven’t seen maintenance since the lead mines shut down in the 1960s. Starting from the Kiamichi River bridge, you’ll immediately hit a technical rock garden where the creek has cut the road down to bedrock shelves. The route climbs 1,200 feet in three miles through a series of steep switchbacks, with the crux move at Wolf Creek Falls — a near-vertical rock face that demands perfect line choice and spotting.
This is expert-level technical driving that requires modified suspension, skid plates, and rock sliders. Bring a full recovery kit and don’t attempt this alone. Late fall through early spring offers the best conditions when creek levels are manageable. No permits needed, but you’re in genuine wilderness — plan accordingly. The payoff is spectacular ridge views across the Ouachita Mountains and access to some of Oklahoma’s most remote backcountry camping.
