Lost Maples State Natural Area Fall Color Overlook

Point of Interest

Lost Maples protects a rare stand of bigtooth maples that turn brilliant orange and red each November, creating the only true fall color show in Texas. The overlook sits above the Sabinal River canyon, where spring-fed pools stay cool year-round and massive cypress trees create cathedral-like groves. Peak color usually hits the last week of October through mid-November, drawing photographers from across the state.

The park road is paved but narrow, winding through typical Hill Country terrain. Arrive early during peak season — the small parking area fills by 9 AM on weekends. Spring brings wildflowers and reliable water flow, while summer can be brutally hot with limited shade.
