Llano Estacado Caprock Escarpment Traverse
High plains edge with endless canyon views
The Caprock Escarpment marks where the flat Llano Estacado suddenly drops away into rolling canyon country, and this route follows ranch roads right along that dramatic edge. You’re driving at 3,000+ feet through shortgrass prairie when the world just falls away to your left, revealing red canyonlands stretching to the horizon. The route passes several historical markers where Comanche war parties used to camp and includes a stop at the old XIT Ranch headquarters ruins.
Easy to moderate difficulty on mostly maintained ranch roads, though some sandy sections can get soft after rain. Any high-clearance vehicle handles it fine, though 4WD helps in the sandy washes. Spring and fall offer the best weather and wildflowers, while summer gets brutally hot with little shade. No permits needed but respect private property boundaries — this route follows established county roads and authorized ranch tracks. Bring plenty of water and fuel, and prepare for some of the biggest sky country Texas has to offer.
