Broken Bow Lake Backcountry Circuit
Oklahoma's deepest backcountry lake circuit
Deep in the Ouachita Mountains, this network of forest service roads winds through some of Oklahoma’s most remote country around Broken Bow Lake. You’ll follow old logging roads that snake through dense hardwood forests, crossing Mountain Fork River and several unnamed creeks that can turn technical after rain. The route passes abandoned homesteads from the 1940s and connects to primitive camping areas along Glover Creek where the water runs crystal clear over sandstone bedrock.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and rutted forest roads. Spring brings muddy conditions that can trap even lifted trucks, while summer offers the best access but watch for flash flooding in creek beds. No permits required, but you’re 20+ miles from cell service once you’re in deep. Pack extra fuel, water, and recovery gear. This is real backcountry Oklahoma where you can camp for days without seeing another soul.
