Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant Visitor Centre

Point of Interest

This massive geothermal installation sits on the Hengill volcanic system, producing electricity and hot water for the Reykjavík area. The visitor center provides educational exhibits about geothermal energy and Iceland’s volcanic geology, while the surrounding landscape showcases active steam vents and geothermal features. Free parking accommodates larger rigs, and the facility serves as a good weather shelter during highland preparation.

Located directly off Route 1 about 30km east of Reykjavík, making it easily accessible year-round. The center operates daily with guided tours available, though self-guided exploration of the grounds is always possible. Popular stop for overlanders heading to or from the highland routes via Hveragerði.
