Geysir Hot Spring Geothermal Area
The original Geysir rarely erupts anymore, but nearby Strokkur blows every 5-10 minutes, shooting water 20-30 meters skyward. The entire area bubbles and steams with dozens of hot pools and fumaroles. Tourist facilities include a visitor center, restaurant, and large parking area that can handle overlanding rigs.
Easily reached via paved roads from Reykjavík, making it a perfect shakedown stop before heading into serious highland country. Can get absolutely mobbed with tour buses during peak hours – early morning or evening visits offer better photo opportunities and parking.
