Kaldidalur Highland Track
Medieval glacier pass between Langjökull and Ok
The Kaldidalur route cuts between Langjökull and Ok glaciers through what translates to “Cold Valley” — Iceland’s oldest documented mountain pass used since medieval times. This 40-kilometer highland track connects the Húsafell area in the west to Þingvellir National Park in the south, crossing the Central Highland plateau at 600 meters elevation through stark volcanic desert punctuated by glacier views. The route passes the ruins of Sturlunga-era shelters and offers direct access to Langjökull glacier’s southern terminus.
Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD for loose volcanic gravel and potential water crossings during snowmelt. Best accessed June through September when highland roads officially open, though early season can mean river fords and lingering snow patches. No fuel or services exist on the route — carry extra fuel and emergency supplies. The payoff is raw highland solitude, glacier proximity, and driving one of Iceland’s most historically significant mountain crossings without the crowds of more popular F-roads.
