Backbone Mountain Trail System
This undeveloped trail system crosses Backbone Mountain, Maryland’s highest point at 3,360 feet. Multiple forest service roads branch off from the main spine, offering access to primitive camping spots in mixed hardwood forest. Most sites are small, fitting 1-2 vehicles max. Fire rings are present but bring your own water. Weekdays are typically empty; weekends see light use from hunters and hikers.
Access via Cranesville Road from US-219 near Swanton. Roads are gravel to rough dirt, requiring high-clearance vehicles in wet conditions. Some steep grades and creek crossings. Winter access depends on snow conditions and road maintenance. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent.
