Caminho das Missões Jesuíticas Rio Grande do Sul

The ruins of São Miguel das Missões mark the start of this historical overland route through Rio Grande do Sul’s mission territory, following cattle trails and colonial roads that connected 17th-century Jesuit reductions. The route winds through working estancias and crosses the Rio Ijuí at the old stone ford near Roque Gonzales, passing abandoned mission foundations and gaucho cemeteries hidden in native Araucaria forests. Technical creek crossings and soft sand sections challenge drivers between Porto Xavier and São Luiz Gonzaga.

Easy to moderate depending on seasonal flooding — the Ijuí and Piratini river crossings can become impassable during summer rains. High-clearance vehicle recommended, 4WD helpful in wet conditions. Year-round access with best conditions March through November. No permits required, but respect private ranch gates. Fuel and supplies available in Santo Ângelo. What you get: a journey through Brazil’s forgotten colonial history, gaucho culture, and some of the best traditional barbacoa this side of Uruguay.
