Cordillera de Mérida Páramo Traverse

The old chrome and coal mining roads above Mérida climb through every ecosystem Venezuela offers, from coffee plantations to páramo tundra where frailejones grow like alien sculptures. The route connects the villages of Mucuchíes and Apartaderos via a network of mining tracks that reach 4,200 meters near Pico Bolívar, passing abandoned mining equipment and stone shelters built by workers in the 1960s. The technical highlight comes at Paso del Cóndor, where the track threads between glacial moraines with 1,000-foot drops on both sides and views across the entire Cordillera.

This is expert-level terrain demanding experienced high-altitude driving and proper cold-weather gear. Sudden weather changes can drop visibility to zero, and altitude sickness hits hard above 3,500 meters. A winch is recommended for the steepest climbs, and tire chains may be needed during wet season mudslides. Best tackled during dry season (December-March) when roads are most stable.
