Salar de Uyuni Circumnavigation Route

Navigate the world's largest salt flat mirror

Moderate

The Salar de Uyuni stretches 4,086 square miles of blindingly white salt crust at 11,995 feet above sea level, making it the world’s largest salt flat and one of the most disorienting drives on the planet. The traditional circumnavigation route starts in Colchani village on the eastern edge, cuts straight across the geometric salt polygons to Incahuasi Island with its ancient cacti, then follows the western perimeter past flamingo-filled colored lagoons before looping back through the Train Cemetery outside Uyuni town. During dry season (May-November), the salt forms a hard crust that can support vehicle weight, but navigation becomes a test of GPS skills when every direction looks identical for 360 degrees.

This is a moderate technical challenge requiring high-clearance 4WD and absolute GPS redundancy — the featureless expanse has claimed vehicles that simply drove in circles until fuel ran out. Best tackled during dry season with extra water, food, and fuel for 3-4 days. Wet season (December-April) creates the famous mirror effect but makes crossing impossible. The reward is camping on an alien landscape under some of the clearest night skies on Earth, plus visiting remote hot springs and colored mineral lagoons that few tourists ever reach.
