Marfa Lights Viewing Area
The lights appear as glowing orbs that split, merge, dance, and vanish in the desert darkness east of the Chinati Mountains. Nobody knows what causes them — theories range from atmospheric phenomena to car headlights to something more otherworldly. The viewing platform sits 9 miles east of Marfa on Highway 90, with interpretive signs and parking for about 20 vehicles.
Best viewing is after sunset on clear nights, especially when there’s no moon. Bring folding chairs, snacks, and patience — the lights don’t perform on schedule. The platform gets crowded on weekends and during the Marfa Lights Festival in September. Some nights you’ll see nothing, other nights the whole desert seems to pulse with unexplained light. Either way, the star show out here is worth the stop.
