Tenorio Volcano Crater Rim Technical Challenge
Active crater rim assault through primary rainforest
This brutal technical route climbs Tenorio Volcano’s eastern face through virtually untouched primary rainforest to reach the active crater rim at 1,916 meters. The track starts near Bijagua and immediately hits steep volcanic scree and exposed root systems that demand perfect line choice and momentum management. You’ll navigate collapsed lava tubes and thermal vents that create localized weather systems — expect sudden downpours even in dry season. The infamous ‘Gradas del Diablo’ section at kilometer 14 requires winching or perfect spotter coordination.
Expert only — this isn’t a trail, it’s a geological obstacle course that chews up undercarriages and breaks drivetrain components. Need fully built rigs with rock sliders, lockers, winch, and extensive recovery gear. Dry season (December-April) only when thermal activity is lowest. No official permits but notify park rangers. The payoff is standing on an active crater rim with views into bubbling mud pots and across the entire Guanacaste lowlands to the Pacific.
