Puriscal to Mastatal Mountain Coffee Road
Coffee country mountain road through rural heartland
The gravel road from Puriscal town center to the remote village of Mastatal cuts through some of Costa Rica’s most traditional coffee country, climbing through steep terrain where families have grown beans for generations. This route follows old ox-cart paths converted to rough vehicle roads, crossing multiple creek beds and navigating around massive coffee processing facilities built into the mountainsides. The road passes through La Cangreja, where a concrete bridge over the Tulín River marks the halfway point and transition from maintained gravel to rough track.
This is a moderate technical route requiring high clearance and 4WD for the final third, especially during rainy season when creek crossings become challenging. Fuel up in Puriscal as there are no services for 30 miles. Best traveled dry season (December-April) when stream levels are manageable. The reward is authentic rural Costa Rica away from tourist zones, with opportunities for farm stays and some of the country’s best coffee direct from processors.
