Laguna Verde Nevado del Ruiz Trailhead
At 4,700 meters, this trailhead sits in the páramo where oxygen runs short and weather turns violent without warning. The trail leads to Laguna Verde, a stunning glacial lake that changes from emerald to steel gray as clouds roll over the glacier. Park at the small dirt lot and prepare for bitter cold — snow can fall any month. The volcanic activity adds an edge of danger that keeps most tourists away.
The final 15 kilometers are rough gravel with steep grades and switchbacks. Weather closes the road frequently, and park rangers will turn you back if volcanic activity spikes. Start early — afternoon storms are vicious up here. Bring layers, altitude meds, and respect for the mountain.
