Nevado del Ruiz Crater Rim Trailhead
The trailhead sits at the end of a rough 4WD track that climbs from the park entrance to within hiking distance of Nevado del Ruiz’s active crater. At this elevation, the air is thin and weather changes fast — bring layers and rain gear. The short hike to the crater rim offers views into the steaming volcanic caldera, but volcanic activity levels determine access.
Road requires high-clearance 4WD and gets treacherous when wet. Park rangers monitor volcanic activity and close access when danger levels rise. Best attempted in dry season (December-March) when roads are most stable. Check volcanic alert levels before heading up — this mountain killed 25,000 people in 1985 when it erupted.
