El Sótano de las Golondrinas Cave Entrance

Point of Interest

This massive limestone pit plunges 376 meters straight down, creating one of Earth’s most spectacular natural phenomena. Every dawn, clouds of swifts and green parrots spiral upward out of the depths in coordinated formations visible from the rim overlook. The best viewing is between 6-8 AM when the birds exit, and 6-8 PM when they return.

Located in the Sierra Gorda mountains near Aquismón, San Luis Potosí. The access road requires high-clearance vehicles for the final 8 kilometers of rough limestone track. Rappelling into the cave requires permits and specialized equipment, but the rim viewing is free and equally impressive.

World's largest cave shaft with epic bird spectacle
