Ruta de los Monarcas Sierra Michoacán
Monarch migration through high Sierra forests
Every winter, millions of monarch butterflies descend on the oyamel fir forests of Sierra Chincua and El Rosario, creating one of nature’s most spectacular migrations. This high-altitude circuit winds through the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve via rough forest roads that connect Angangueo to Ocampo, passing through dense pine and fir forests at elevations exceeding 10,000 feet. The route includes technical climbs through Sierra Chincua and challenging descents toward Zitácuaro, with several river crossings along tributaries of the Lerma watershed.
This is a moderate to difficult trail requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear for muddy sections during rainy season. Best tackled November through March when butterflies are present and roads are most accessible. Bring warm gear—temperatures drop below freezing at night. Permits required for sanctuary access, available in Angangueo. The payoff is witnessing one of the world’s greatest natural phenomena while traversing some of central Mexico’s most pristine mountain terrain.
