Volcán Nevado de Colima Alpine Road

Mexico's highest drivable volcanic summit challenge

Expert

The washboard climb up Volcán Nevado de Colima’s flanks starts innocent enough through pine forest before the road turns into a boulder-strewn nightmare above treeline. This 22-mile route from Ciudad Guzmán pushes through cloud forest, alpine meadows, and exposed volcanic scree to reach Mexico’s third-highest peak at 14,015 feet. The final eight miles demand low-range crawling over loose volcanic rock with drop-offs that’ll pucker your seat cushions, especially around the infamous Paso del Diablo switchbacks at 12,500 feet.

This is expert-level terrain requiring solid rock-crawling skills, underbody protection, and recovery gear. Winter brings snow above 11,000 feet making the route impassable November through March. Altitude hits hard here — bring water, warm gear, and patience for the thin air. The payoff is standing on the crater rim of an active volcanic system with views across four states when the clouds part. Fuel up in Ciudad Guzmán; there’s nothing past the park entrance.
