Ruta de la Independencia Mountain Circuit
Revolutionary war paths through volcanic highlands
The Ruta de la Independencia Mountain Circuit traces the footsteps of Mexico’s revolutionary heroes through the rugged volcanic terrain between Toluca and Morelia, connecting historic battlefields with challenging mountain passes. This 180-kilometer loop begins in Valle de Bravo and climbs through the Sierra de Zacualpan, passing the site where Father Hidalgo rallied indigenous fighters in 1810, before descending through pine forests to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve near Angangueo. The route includes a technical ascent over Cerro de las Cruces, where cobblestone sections of the original Camino Real still exist, and multiple stream crossings that can become torrents during the rainy season.
This is expert-level overlanding that demands serious 4WD capability, low-range gearing, and drivers comfortable with narrow mountain roads where oncoming trucks appear around blind corners. Rocky sections, loose volcanic soil, and seasonal water crossings make this a wet-season challenge from June through September. No permits required, but fuel up in Valle de Bravo and carry plenty of water — mountain villages offer basic supplies but don’t count on finding repair parts. What you earn is an immersive journey through Mexico’s independence history combined with some of the country’s most challenging mountain driving, plus the chance to witness the winter monarch migration if you time it right between November and March.
