Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage Trailhead

The most famous mountain pilgrimage in Ireland starts from a well-developed car park at the base of the iconic cone-shaped peak. The trail climbs 2,500 feet over loose quartzite scree and rock – brutal on the knees but deeply rewarding. On clear days, the summit offers sweeping views across Clew Bay’s 365 islands and the wild Atlantic coast. Expect crowds on weekends and during the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage in July.

The car park has toilets and an information center, but no camping allowed. The upper sections of the trail are notoriously loose and slippery – proper hiking boots essential. Weather changes rapidly, and the summit can be shrouded in cloud even when it’s clear at the base. Allow 4-5 hours for the round trip.
