Sierra de la Laguna Mountain Circuit
Baja's secret mountain wilderness above the desert
Most people picture Baja as pure desert, but the Sierra de la Laguna hides pine forests and year-round creeks at 6,000+ feet elevation. The mining roads connecting La Burrera to Santiago wind through granite boulder fields that’ll scrape your differential, while the descent through Cañón de la Zorra requires precise wheel placement around house-sized rocks that’ve tumbled from the canyon walls.
This difficult route demands experienced drivers with armored vehicles — rock sliders essential, recovery points mandatory. December through March brings snow to the peaks, making the route impassable. Best season is April through June when wildflowers bloom and water flows. You’ll find yourself in an ecosystem that shouldn’t exist, camping under pines while desert stretches to both horizons.
