MacGillycuddy’s Reeks Black Valley Cross

Valley road to Ireland's highest wilderness.

Easy

The Black Valley earned its name not from darkness but from the black peat that dominates this glacial valley between Carrauntoohil and Purple Mountain. This route follows the old turf road used by generations of Kerry families to harvest fuel, crossing three mountain streams and passing the ruins of pre-Famine settlements. The track climbs steadily from Kate Kearney’s Cottage through increasingly wild terrain, with the towering bulk of Ireland’s highest peak dominating the southern skyline and ancient stone walls marking long-abandoned potato fields.

Easy to moderate difficulty suits most stock vehicles with decent ground clearance, though stream crossings can become impassable after heavy rain. The biggest challenge is navigation—GPS signals fade between the peaks and old tracks branch everywhere. Best tackled May through September when streams are manageable and visibility decent. No permits required but respect farming operations and close all gates. This valley remained without electricity until 1976, and that isolation still defines the experience—pure Kerry mountain solitude with some of Ireland’s most spectacular camping beneath Carrauntoohil’s shadowed cliffs.
