Amistad National Recreation Area Diablo East Unit Road
Forgotten ridge road to Rio Grande overlooks
The Diablo East Unit Road cuts 14 miles through some of the most isolated country in Val Verde County, following ancient cattle trails across limestone ridges studded with lechuguilla and ocotillo. This forgotten corner of Amistad National Recreation Area sees maybe a dozen vehicles per month, winding through mesquite thickets to spectacular overlooks of the Rio Grande where it backs up behind Amistad Dam. The road terminates at primitive campsites perched 200 feet above the international waters, with Mexico’s Sierra del Burro mountains rising across the reservoir.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for the rocky sections and loose caliche climbs, though stock vehicles handle it fine with careful line choice. Summer’s brutal—come October through March when daytime temps stay reasonable. No services for 50 miles, so pack water and fuel accordingly. This is the kind of backcountry solitude that’s vanishing from Texas, where you can camp under stars so bright they’ll burn holes in your retinas and wake to nothing but wind through the thorns.
