Healy Pass Beara Peninsula Track
Ancient smugglers' pass through the Caha Mountains
The Healy Pass road climbs 334 meters through the Caha Mountains, following an old smugglers’ route between Adrigole in Cork and Lauragh in Kerry. Stone walls line the narrow track as it winds past abandoned famine cottages and through sections where the original Irish engineers carved the route directly into the mountainside. The summit offers commanding views across Bantry Bay to the Beara Peninsula’s rugged coastline, with the Atlantic stretching endlessly westward.
This is a moderate route requiring high-clearance vehicles and careful driving on the narrow, winding sections with loose stone surfaces. Weather changes rapidly here — mist can roll in within minutes, reducing visibility to near zero. Best tackled April through October when ice isn’t a concern. No permits needed, but respect the working farms and close all gates. The reward is some of Ireland’s most dramatic mountain scenery and a genuine taste of the island’s wild character.
