Burren Green Road Network
Ancient drove roads across Ireland's lunar landscape
The Green Roads of the Burren follow paths carved by cattle drovers across this 100-square-mile limestone plateau that looks more like the surface of an alien planet than rural Ireland. These ancient tracks wind between limestone pavements where underground rivers disappear into caves, past 5,000-year-old stone forts and through landscapes where Arctic and Mediterranean plants grow side by side. The main route from Fanore to Ballyvaughan crosses exposed limestone terraces where a wrong turn leads to sheer cliffs dropping into Galway Bay.
Easy to moderate difficulty suits most vehicles, though the limestone can be slippery when wet and sharp enough to slice tires. Stone walls force single-vehicle width in places, requiring careful navigation. Spring brings spectacular wildflower displays, while winter storms can make the exposed plateau impassable. The reward is driving through one of Europe’s most unique geological landscapes, where Bronze Age burial chambers stand sentinel over an ecosystem found nowhere else on Earth.
