Delaware State Forest Thunder Swamp Historic Circuit
Historic logging roads through Thunder Swamp wilderness
Thunder Swamp earned its name from the echo of massive hemlocks crashing during 1800s clear-cut operations—today those same railroad grades form a gnarly 4×4 network through recovering wilderness. Forest Road 191 follows the old Shohola Railroad bed past rusted steam donkey remnants and CCC camp foundations, while Mud Run Trail challenges drivers with spring-fed creek crossings that turn technical fast. The route connects to historic Pecks Pond via abandoned logging spurs that require careful navigation through boulder fields.
Difficult rating earned through steep descents, loose rock, and unpredictable water levels at Thunder Creek crossing. Modified stock 4WD minimum with rock sliders recommended for the rougher sections. June through September provides optimal conditions when creek levels stabilize and roads firm up. State forest camping allowed with self-registration. This 24-mile circuit offers genuine Pennsylvania backcountry solitude plus industrial logging history without the typical Poconos tourist circus.
