Vesuvius Recreation Area Iron Furnace Historic Site
The massive stone furnace stack rises from the riverbank like an ancient tower, a relic from Ohio’s iron-making era. Built in 1833, the Vesuvius Furnace processed local bog iron ore using charcoal from surrounding forests. A quarter-mile interpretive loop explains the smelting process and shows remnants of the old company town that once housed 200+ workers.
Located within Wayne National Forest just off the Ohio River Scenic Byway. The gravel access road is suitable for any vehicle, and there’s a small parking area with vault toilets. The site connects to longer hiking trails if you want to explore the forest beyond the historic area.
