This 8-mile circuit through Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge follows the ancient Lake Warren shoreline, where post-glacial sand deposits created unique prairie habitat along Lake Erie’s western shore. The Wildlife Drive connects a series of dikes and elevated roads through restored wetlands, offering close encounters with sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, and massive waterfowl migrations during spring and fall. Multiple observation towers provide elevated views across thousands of acres of marsh and grassland that once covered northwestern Ohio.
Easy driving suitable for any vehicle with decent ground clearance — even crossover SUVs handle the maintained gravel roads without issue. The refuge is open year-round, but prime wildlife viewing runs March through May and September through November. No camping allowed within the refuge, but state parks nearby provide alternatives. You get world-class birding and a rare glimpse of Ohio’s original landscape before European settlement transformed the region.

Do I need a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle for this trail?
No. Any street vehicle handles this fine — it's well-maintained gravel the whole way. A sedan or minivan will do it without issue.
Is the Wildlife Drive open year-round?
Best access runs March through November. The drive can close during severe weather, flooding, or special refuge management events, so check the USFWS Ottawa Refuge site before you go.

There's no camping inside the refuge itself. Oak Harbor is about 10 minutes away and has basic services; East Harbor State Park is roughly 20 miles east and has full campground facilities right on Lake Erie.
