Lake Erie Coastal Sand Prairie Explorer
Great Lakes coastal wilderness with sand driving
Lake Erie’s western shore hides some surprising backcountry terrain where ancient beach ridges create a maze of sand roads through rare oak savanna and coastal wetlands. This route follows old hunting club roads and wildlife management tracks through Magee Marsh and connects to Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge’s restricted-access areas. The highlight is the technical beach driving section where you can run the shoreline for miles during low water periods.
Easy to moderate difficulty but sand driving skills essential — aired-down tires and recovery gear mandatory for beach sections. Best run October through March when hunting seasons allow access and migrating waterfowl provide incredible wildlife viewing. Special use permits required for beach driving sections through Ohio Division of Wildlife. Stock vehicles handle inland portions fine but 4WD recommended for sand. Fuel and supplies available in Port Clinton. This is Ohio’s closest thing to coastal overlanding with legitimate wilderness feel despite proximity to major cities.
