Burr Oak State Park Backwoods Loop

Deep in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio, the Burr Oak Backwoods Loop threads through second-growth timber and remnants of 19th-century iron furnaces. The route follows maintenance roads and fire breaks around Burr Oak Lake, crossing Burr Oak Creek three times and climbing through the Dock Road section where Confederate prisoners once worked the local iron industry. The toughest section hits between mile markers 8 and 12, where seasonal washouts create deep ruts and the trail narrows to barely one vehicle width through dense hardwood forest.

This is honest moderate difficulty requiring high clearance and 4WD in wet conditions. Spring brings muddy creek bottoms and fallen timber, while fall offers the best traction and visibility. No permits needed, but check with park rangers about seasonal closures. Dispersed camping isn’t allowed within park boundaries, but the adjacent Wayne National Forest offers plenty of options. The payoff is genuine solitude and a taste of Ohio’s rugged side most folks never see.
