Shenandoah National Park Old Rag Mountain Fire Road

The Old Rag Mountain Fire Road punches straight up the backside of Shenandoah’s most iconic peak, climbing 2,200 feet in just over 4 miles through dense hardwood forest. This maintenance road was cut to service the old fire tower and provides 4WD access to within a half-mile of the 3,268-foot summit. The road features steep granite outcroppings, loose rock gardens, and tight switchbacks that’ll have you working your low range. Past the halfway point, you’ll hit “The Ledges”—a series of exposed rock faces where the trail carved directly into the mountainside.

This is expert-level terrain requiring serious rock-crawling capability, recovery gear, and spotters for solo vehicles. Closed December through March for wildlife protection. Park entrance fee required, but no additional permits for the fire road itself. Bring plenty of water and expect to air down for the granite sections. The payoff is unmatched Blue Ridge views and bragging rights for conquering one of Virginia’s most technical mountain ascents without hiking boots.
