Pintler Pass Road
Technical Continental Divide crossing
Pintler Pass Road climbs from Georgetown Lake to the Continental Divide at 8,200 feet, threading between the jagged peaks of the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness. This 18-mile technical route follows an old mining road built in the 1890s to access silver claims near the divide. The road deteriorates significantly after mile 12, requiring careful navigation through loose rock and steep switchbacks before reaching alpine meadows dotted with tarns and snowfields that linger into July.
Expert-level difficulty demands modified 4WD with skid plates, aggressive tires, and low-range gearing. The final 3 miles to the pass challenge even experienced drivers with loose talus and 20-degree grades. July through September only, and weather changes fast at altitude. No permits required but camping is restricted near the wilderness boundary. Philipsburg has the nearest services 45 minutes away. This is serious mountain driving that rewards skilled operators with some of Montana’s most spectacular alpine scenery.
