Monongahela National Forest Road 86 Tea Creek Backcountry Loop
Tea Creek wilderness backcountry access
Forest Road 86 penetrates deep into the Tea Creek drainage where old-growth remnants tower above mountain laurel thickets and wild brook trout rise in crystalline pools. The route follows an abandoned logging railroad grade for the first few miles before climbing steep switchbacks to Tea Creek Mountain’s shoulder, passing the rusted remains of Depression-era logging camps. Multiple stream fords and seasonal washouts keep you engaged, while the final approach to Tea Creek Mountain offers commanding views of the Williams River Valley.
Moderate difficulty with several rocky creek crossings that can become treacherous during spring runoff or summer thunderstorms. Any high-clearance vehicle can tackle the main route, but side spurs demand 4WD and careful navigation. Best accessed May through October when stream levels are manageable. No permits required, with excellent dispersed camping opportunities along the creek. Nearest fuel and supplies in Richwood, 25 miles southeast. Pack a fly rod — the native brook trout fishing is exceptional.
