Monongahela National Forest Road 19 Shavers Mountain
Shavers Mountain backbone punishment
Forest Road 19 cuts a demanding path along Shavers Mountain’s spine, linking the Cheat River valley to Snowshoe’s ski country through some of West Virginia’s most remote terrain. The route starts innocuously at Cheat Bridge but quickly climbs into technical rocky sections that’ll test your approach angles, especially around mile marker 8 where the trail navigates a series of washouts from old logging operations. The summit views across the Allegheny highlands are worth the punishment, with glimpses of Spruce Knob on clear days.
This is a legitimate technical challenge requiring high-clearance 4WD with aggressive tread and recovery gear. Deep ruts, loose shale, and exposed bedrock make this unsuitable for anything but serious 4x4s. Best tackled April through October when snow isn’t an issue, though spring can be muddy as hell. No permits needed, but fuel up in Elkins before starting — it’s 35 miles of commitment through country where your cell phone becomes a paperweight. Multiple primitive camping spots along the ridge let you make it a proper backcountry adventure.
